A Tournament For Planet And Community

FOOTBAL UNDER THE STARS

Bringing Football To The Top Of The World

‘Football Under the Stars’ (FUTS) is a unique vision that brings the world’s most popular sport to one of the most remote places on Earth. The tournament aims to raise awareness about the fragility of Himalayan ecosystems and cultures while blending natural and sporting beauty.

A CHANCE TO SEE THE STARS ON AND OFF THE FIELD

A groundbreaking, week-long football tournament played at nearly 15,000 ft. The 6 vs 6 tournament will take place at the end of June, in alignment with the New Moon (June 25). It will be played at night, under starlight, to highlight the region’s celestial beauty. Teams will be outfitted with glow-in-the-dark kits, and play on a pitch with glow-in-the-dark lines and goalposts that accent the starlit ambiance.

Sharing A Unique Location With The World

At 4,500m (14,700 ft), Hanle is one of the highest altitude locations in the world. The region in India’s union territory of Ladakh is home to roughly 2,000 people and is home to India’s first Dark Sky Reserve. It is a 1,073 km darkness sanctuary in the Himalayan mountains, where observers can reach out and touch the stars.

Hanle offers an unparalleled environment to play football and gaze upon the Milky Way. It is also a premier tourist destination offering access to beautiful landscapes, the highest motorable pass in the world, and ancient Tibetan monasteries.

Football Under the Stars has the backing of regional government officials and the Indian military. Visitors will be shuttled from Leh to Hanle by eco-minibus.

Powered By Impact-driven Entities

Visitors will be welcomed by 1. Ladakh FC, Ladakh’s first football club. The club is known for playing a key role in establishing the Climate Cup in Leh. It is also the primary pathway for talent development in the region, offering local kids the opportunity to dream of a football career

Partnering with 1. Ladakh FC is Glory Studio, an award winning content agency specialising in football storytelling. As ‘Explorers of the Beautiful Game’, Glory will be ensuring that this unique tournament is documented to its full potential.

Using The Power Of Football To Raise Awareness And Create Change

Never before has football been played at such a high altitude with such access to starlight. The tournament is being planned with locals in mind. A temporary two-tier stand will be put up around the pitch for local fans. Villagers will be allowed to sell their handmade products and rent out their homestays, and temporary jobs will be available for those who wish to take part.

Hanle as a whole will benefit from increased visibility and will be able to share its concerns about a changing climate that is altering the local way of life. Perhaps most importantly, Football Under the Stars will promote the practice of sport and the exchange of cultures and ideas. The beautiful game will help link Global North and Global South through a shared passion.

30 years ago, villagers were skeptical of the establishment of the Indian National Observatory. Eventually, they understood its benefits. Now, they have a chance to reap the rewards of a unique football venture and share the starlight so unique to their home.
